One day after the Dutch government collapsed, Prime Minister Jan Peter Blakenende said he expects Dutch troops in Afghanistan to come home before the end of the year.
“The moment the Netherlands says as sole and first country we will no longer have activities at the end of 2010, it will raise questions in other countries and this really pains me,” Mr. Balkenende told the Dutch television program “Buitenhof” in an interview today, according to Reuters.
Many see the departure of the Netherlands from the Afghan war effort as a sign of things to come, as the Obama administration struggles to get European allies to commit more troops to Afghanistan.
