With winds picking up to more than 40 mph the tropical depression that was forming in the Gulf of Mexico officially became Tropical Storm Erin on Wednesday morning.
Tropical Storm Erin was still nearly 250 miles off the coast of Texas and moving at 12 mph but the system was intensifying. Forecasters expect the storm to dump up to 5 inches of rain on the coast of Texas around Corpus Christi when it hits landfall on Thursday.
Erin is not expected to reach the 74 mph winds necessary to classify it as a hurricane.
