Peru Rocked by Three Major Earthquakes

Peru was rocked by three major earthquakes, the first registering a 7.7 magnitude on the Richter scale, that sent residents scurrying into the streets of downtown Lima for safety.

The 7.7 earthquake was followed by a 7.5 temblor according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Both quakes were offshore but a third earthquake struck land and registered 7.5 as well.

Buildings and houses shook for an estimated 20 seconds as the earth shook beneath them causing power outages throughout Lima and surrounding areas.

Extent of the damage is still unknown but quakes registering higher than 7 typically carry fatalities.
