David Beckham Scores First Goal, Advances to Finals

David Beckham scored his first goal of the season in a win against DC United, 2-0, in the SuperLiga semifinals. Beckham also received his first assist in this game, which was his first start with the LA Galaxy. The Galaxy advanced to the tournament final, where they will play Mexican champion Pachuca on August 29.

Beckham played a total of 63 minutes in the game, compared to just 37 in two previous games. He has been recuperating with a nagging left ankle injury that has prevented him from practicing with the Galaxy until Tuesday. He was named captain for Wednesday's match, a title previously held by teammate Landon Donovan.

The fanfare he has received in the United States has been monumental. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Eva Longoria, amongst others, were in attendance for his home debut with the Galaxy. This game, which was not part of the Galaxy's season-ticket package, has an attendance of 17,223 in the 27,000-capacity stadium.
