Pilots of the German airline Lufthansa have begun a four-day strike to protest their lack of job security, with the Cockpit union saying the company is increasingly hiring foreign pilots who will work for less money.
As many as 3,000 flights have been cancelled and the airline has warned that passengers could experience delays as a plan is put in place to handle the strike. Lufthansa has filed an injunction to halt the strike, saying the move was disproportionate and would cost them about two-thirds of their flights.
Lufthansa has estimated the strike will cost about $34 million a day and could cause serious damage to the airline’s reputation.
Despite the airlines concerns the Cockpit union has said Lufthansa has shown little allegiance to its pilots and appeared to be making plans to cut staff cost by moving toward foreign subsidiaries. The union has asked for a 6.4% pay raise for the pilots as well as more involvement in company decisions.
