U.S. President Barack Obama has unveiled new plans to move healthcare legislation forward, plans that will be discussed further when the president holds bipartisan talks at the White House on Thursday.
Among the key aspects of Obama’s plans is the ability of the government, through the federal Health and Human Services Department, to prevent health insurers from placing excessive premium increases on policy holders.
Revamping the current healthcare system has been a central battleground between Democrats and Republicans but Obama urged “both parties to seek common ground in an effort to solve a problem that's been with us for generations” when they meet on Thursday.
Obama’s plan would also bar insurance companies from denying coverage to people with existing medical problems or charging those people more. To accommodate those demands Obama’s plan would also require most Americans to carry health insurance coverage.
Reforming the healthcare system has been a focal point in Obama’s first year in office and has called the move necessary.
On Saturday Obama addressed the significance of Thursday’s televised talks and urged the two sides to refrain from turning the event into “political theatre, with each side simply reciting talking points and trying to score political points.”
