The New Infiniti G37

Think of the new Infiniti G37 coupe as a Nissan Z with the practicality of a back seat.

More powerful, still more fun to drive, yet elegant and refined, the redesigned G coupe is scheduled next month to join a redesigned G-Sedan in showrooms.

The sedan and coupe, both rear-wheel drive, have more horses in the redesign; where the predecessors got by with no more than 293 hp., the new sedans' 3.5-liter V-6s are good for 306 hp., while the coupes get a larger, 3.7-liter version of those engines that deliver 330 hp.

The G's 20-gallon tank helps increase range, but the 3.7-liter engine wants premium fuel only and, in my tester, burned it at a rate no better than 17.1 miles per gallon, according to the car's driving computer.

The G's interior does its part to make driving enjoyable.

Motor heads will debate at length whether the Japanese really have captured the soul of the best German driving machines, but, for whatever it's worth, Motor Trend published a detailed comparison of the G37 and significantly more expensive BMW 335i in its August issue and awarded the Infinti "a narrow but decisive margin of victory."
