NASCAR was struck by tragedy once more on Thursday night as 34-year-old John Blewett III was killed while racing in the Whelen Modified Tour at the Thompson International Speedway in Connecticut.
The accident occurred shortly after a restart and involved John’s younger brother Jimmy Blewett who had hit a wall in a turn and then caromed and struck John’s car after it had been rear-ended by Woody Pitkat.
Jimmy jumped out of his car to check on his brother and immediately waved for assistance. Rescue crews were able to remove Blewett from his vehicle and then transported the racer to Hubbard Regional Hospital in Webster, Mass. Shortly before 11 p.m. Blewett was pronounced dead from massive head injuries.
