Lufthansa Pilots Suspend Strike, Union Officials Return to Negotiations

A planned four-day strike by pilots of the German airline Lufthansa has been suspended after union officials agreed to return to the negotiation table less than 24 hours into the work stoppage.

Nearly 4,000 pilots flying for Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cargo and Germanwings agreed to strike after the Cockpit union could not come to an agreement with airline officials concerning job security and pay issues.

As many as 3,000 flights were in jeopardy of being cancelled as a result of the strike but with the suspension only about 800 failed to take off on Monday. Lufthansa had been trying to accommodate the nearly 10,000 passengers who had been affected by the cancellations, offering train transportation for domestic travelers and rescheduling international flights.

The strike was called by the Cockpit union after they expressed concerns that the airline was hiring more foreign pilots who were willing to work for lower wages. The union has called for commitments by Lufthansa to ensure pilot job security as passengers are moved to less expensive foreign affiliates as well as greater say in company decisions. Cockpit is also looking for a 6.4% pay raise for the pilots.

Lufthansa has said pilots’ fears of their jobs being outsourced are unfounded.

While the pilot strike has been suspended the Cockpit union has said there will be no further action taken until at least March 9.
