Able to become a free agent after not being promoted to the majors by Monday, Bobby Kielty has reportedly been given assurances that the Red Sox plan to call him up this weekend.
It sounds like Wily Mo Pena will be let go Friday, with Clay Buchholz replacing him on the roster for Game 1 of the doubleheader and Jacoby Ellsbury taking Buchholz's spot for Game 2.
Following Friday's games, the Red Sox may then option Ellsbury back to Triple-A and officially fill Pena's roster spot and platoon role spot with Kielty.
As of yesterday, it was unclear if the Sox planned to trade Pena today or designate the underperforming outfielder for assignment, which would give them 10 days to either trade, release or outright him to the minors if he cleared waivers and agreed to the assignment.
Kielty, whose pedal-to-the-metal style will remind many Sox fans of Trot Nixon (albeit with bright red hair), entered last night batting .212 with two homers and four RBI in nine games for Pawtucket.
He has hit .255 with 52 homers and 244 RBI in 579 major league games with Oakland, Toronto and Minnesota.
