Have you ever wondered who invests heavily in keeping republican candidates down? Have you wondered just exactly who is bankrolling smear campaigns against McCain, Romney and others? When you take a look at the polling data on the USA Election Polls website, you must wonder why numbers appear to fluctuate so heavily, and while it is undoubtedly true that many times a candidate's television appearance will heavily weight either in favor of the candidate or against her or him, there are other powers at work as well. There are the grassroots organizations that send out canvassers with supposedly edifying pamphlets that point out the candidates' flaws, problems, and misrepresentations of the past or alleged irregularities. Then there are the television ads that may be funded by a variety of committees that are not directly sponsored by the opposing candidate, but perhaps by an organization near and dear to the candidate's heart.
It is no different in the 2008 presidential election, and the names some of the candidates are fighting are rather interesting. Take for example John McCain who is fighting MoveOn.Org which has made stunning expenditures against him to the tune of $102,794 thus far in 2007. According to the FEC, this very same outfit heavily bankrolled in favor of John Kerry in 2004 and it appears that a grudge is harder to let go than a swift boat. Incidentally, McCain is thus far the only republican candidate, against whom MoveOn is rallying, even though he is not really considered the front runner by those who keep a close eye on the poll results.
