While some of his fellow hopefuls for their parties' nominations are favoring a plan that will offer a pathway to citizenship for those who have entered the country illegally and most commonly had to commit identity theft in order to receive semi-legal papers that would fool employers and officials, Rudy Giuliani is steadfast in his assertion that those who commit crimes must be expelled from the United States. Polling results showcased on the USA Election Polls website indicate that in the states most commonly affected by an influx of illegal immigration – namely California, Arizona and Texas - his numbers are soaring.
Event those who are silently agreeing with Giuliani on the immigration issue are careful not to rock the electoral boat, lest a backlash from constituents might cost them the nomination. Yet unapologetically as even, Rudy Giuliani refuses to be cowered into submission by pollsters and opinion experts, and instead shows that he is the candidate for those whose allegiance squarely falls into the anti-illegal immigration camp. In the short run, this may net him the votes that ordinarily would have fallen to Tom Tancredo who is a stalking horse and campaigns mostly on the immigration issue wherever he goes, but in the long run it might cost him the left leaning votes of mainly Latino voters. It is uncertain if Giuliani will be able to compensate for this loss – only 2008 will be able to tell. In the meantime, he advocates a fenced in border, technology assisted border surveillance, and an increase in trained border patrol personnel.
