The Boston Red Sox dealt troubled outfielder Wily Mo Pena and cash considerations to the Washington Nationals on Friday for a player to be named later.
Pena was acquired by the Red Sox in the deal that sent Bronson Arroyo to the Cincinnati Reds on March 20, 2006. Pena hit .301 fro the Red Sox and belted 11 home runs while driving in 42 in 84 games. The free swinging Pena also collected 90 strikeouts in 276 at bats.
The traded will return Pena to the National League where he began his career with the Reds in 2002. In 2004 he had his best year, hitting 26 home runs and driving in 66 in 110 games. He had struggled mightily this year, hitting just .218 with five home runs after 73 games.
