The list of republicans who are refusing to even contend for the nomination of the Democratic Party for the presidential bid in 2008 is long. Amazingly, the names are those of potential candidates that would have a fair shot if not altogether great chances of not only garnering much support but actually also mobilizing fundraisers.
Even though they are not listed on sites like USA Election Polls that offers statistics on every conceivable candidate, there have been several unofficial movements underfoot to either draft them into running or demand that they run by the creation of favorable polling data. Thus far, neither approach has been successful.
Republicans have known for years that Vice President Dick Cheney was not going to run for president. Some are secretly relieved, since Mr. Cheney's approval ratings are not as high as would be desirable for a potential presidential candidate. Colin Powell, on the other hand, has an appeal that transcends party lines and this formerly well liked secretary of state is now adamant in his refusal to even consider a run. Following in his footsteps is Condoleezza Rice who took over Mr. Powell's job. There has been a movement underfoot that mercilessly hounds her to run, hoping for a face off between Hillary Clinton and Mrs. Rice; yet at this point in time this is not going to happen. Other potential candidates who dashed the hopes and dreams of their constituents are Rick Santorum, Bill Frist and George Allen. It is anyone's guess if 2012 will see any changed minds.
