Although the issue of religion is not really very much controversial, the case of Romney proves to be quite serious. Recent polls suggest that people in the United States are not comfortable about having a president who is a Mormon. About 32 percent of the Republicans who responded to the polls said that they are uncomfortable with the idea of a Mormon president.
Many political analysts believe that if Romney wants to win the nomination, he should distance himself from his religion and build his image anew. They believe that if Romney is not so closely associated with his Mormon religion, he may still have a shot at being nominated as presidential candidate of the GOP. However, commenting on the suggestion that he should distance himself from his religion, Romney said that “that's not going to happen.”
The statement of Romney that he will not abandon his faith clearly had some impact on his bid for presidency. When asked as to how he intends to address the problem of his religious affiliation in order to win the nomination, Romney said that he is seriously considering the idea of addressing the issue in a “comprehensive manner” but since the election is still far away, he said it may too early to make any comprehensive actions at the moment.
