Obama defends stand on the Iraq Issue

Bill Burton, the campaign spokesperson of Senator Barack Obama issued a statement that the Senator is proud to have opposed the Iraq war from the very beginning. The response came after Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of another Democratic candidate John Edwards openly criticized Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton over their stand on the issues of Iraq. According to Elizabeth Edwards, Obama just made speeches about things that made him extraordinarily popular in his own district regarding the issues of Iraq. She said that the attitude “holier than thou” attitude of Obama on the Iraq issue is not good for the country. She said that the likes of Senator Obama should be making speeches on why they do not support the Iraq war and that they should stand up and rally their colleagues against the issue. According to Elizabeth Edwards, the fact that Obama and the other Democratic candidates did not use his influence to raise more votes to block the funding bill for Iraq last may shows that he is not a leader.

It must be noted that Senator John Edwards was one of the senators who voted for the authorization to launch an attack on Iraq in 2002. The Senator had made public his regret on voting for the attack against Iraq ever since. He also voted against the many funding requests for the military forces in Iraq later on in the Senate. However, such actions of Senator Edwards may have been lost on his wife. When confronted about the fact that her husband has been voting against the funding request for Iraq, Elizabeth Edwards said that her husband did not do that.
