Hurricane Dean spun off the southern coast of Hispaniola causing flooding throughout the region and claiming the life of at least one child as it turned its attention to Jamaica, carrying with it Category 4 strength winds.
With schools, buildings and even the indoor national sports arena converted to shelters for the islanders, thousands of Jamaicans looked for protection against a storm poised to hit with massive force.
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has said that the island is nearing crisis mode and has pleaded with citizens to find shelter before Hurricane Dean makes landfall. Several Jamaicans live in low lying areas just above sea level and could be subject to powerful surges and flooding.
Forecasters have predicted Jamaica could be hit by up to 20 inches of rain while being battered by winds that hit 145 mph later Sunday afternoon.
