Utah Mine rescuers drill fifth hole in search

After two weeks of unsuccessful attempts to rescue six miners trapped in a Utah mine, rescuers are drilling their fifth and perhaps final hole in an effort to find the trapped men. The vice president of mine co-owner Murray Energy, Rob Moore, acknowledged that there might now be any hope left of finding the men.

“It’s possible they may not be found,” Moore says. He also says he doesn’t have much hope for the fifth hole, “It’s likely we’ll see similar results there. We cant say that with certainty.”

The six men having been missing since August 6 after the Crandall Canyon Mine collapsed. Three rescue workers were killed while tunneling to find the men. Rock and coal exploded from the walls of the mine from the pressure of the mountain, killing the rescuers.

The fourth hole that was drilled showed results of insufficient oxygen to support life. Drilling for the fifth hole won’t be completed until Wednesday.
