Human Rights Group Demands Ousted Niger Leader Face Charges

A local human rights group has demanded that Niger’s ousted President Mamadou Tandja face charges of violating the country’s constitution as well as corruption.

Fusad has said Tandja, who is now being held in the presidential palace, illegally changed Niger’s constitution last year so that he could remain in power past his term limit. The human rights group also said he handed out contracts to foreign oil and uranium firms for personal gain.

Tandja was unseated during a military coup last week. Leaders of the coup have called themselves the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy and have vowed to turn Niger into a democracy. As it stands the leader of that group, Salou Dibo, will act as the head of state and government and will oversee the writing of a new constitution.
