On Saturday, a statue of boxing legend Joe Louis will be unveiled in LaFayette, Alabama. Louis was born in LaFayette in 1914. Although not too much is known of his childhood, Louis is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most important figures in the history of boxing. He won 65 out of 68 professional boxing fights, 51 of those by knockout. Outside of boxing, he was instrumental in helping to desegregate golf. Using his celebrity status to convince the PGA to remove a bylaw, he became the first African-American to play a PGA Tour event. The statue, which is eight feet tall and made of bronze, will be erected outside the Chambers County Courthouse in the small city of roughly 3,000 residents. Louis’s family members are expected to attend the ceremony.
