Hurricane Dean battered the southern coast of Jamaica as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday and has now turned its attention to the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula where it is expected to hit early Tuesday.
The Mexican states of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo as well as the northern part of Belize are expected to take the brunt of Hurricane Dean’s force when it hits.
With the Yucatan Peninsula in its sight, Hurricane Dean will first pass by the Cayman Islands where it is likely to cause flooding and mudslides from surges and rainfall.
The National Weather Service expects Hurricane Dean to continue to gain momentum and reach Category 5 strength winds over the next 24 hours.
