A carbon monoxide leak discovered late Sunday morning left two Virginia Tech students in critical condition and sickened another 17 one day before classes were set to resume on the Blacksburg campus.
The two students were taken to the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville while their three roommates were taken to the Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
Blacksburg Police Capt. Bruce Bradbery said that the leak appeared to have originated from a faulty valve in a gas water heater.
Sunday was supposed to be a day when Virginia Tech put tragedy behind them.
A memorial had been arranged to honor the 27 students and five faculty members who were killed on April 16 when a student, Seung-Hui Cho, opened fire on the quite campus.
