The unstable coal mine that has trapped six miners since Aug. 6 has led rescue workers to all but abandon any future efforts to continue their search.
After safety experts determined the mountain to be too unstable for future drillings a fifth hole was abandoned and essentially ended the two week process of trying to locate the men lost due to a cave-in at the Crandall Canyon Mine.
A fourth hole drilled determined that oxygen levels deep in the mines were insufficient to sustain life and further solidified their decision to halt rescue efforts.
Three rescue workers were killed on Thursday while trying to locate the missing miners.
Family members of the lost Utah miners were outraged by the decision to halt the rescue efforts accusing the mine’s owners and federal officials of abandoning the men.
