The cultural phenomenon that is “High School Musical” has reached new heights as the premier of Disney’s “High School Musical 2” set a new record for basic cable viewers on Friday.
According to Nielsen Media Research the Disney Channel attracted an estimated 17.2 million viewers to the premier of “High School Musical 2” easily surpassing the previous record of 16 million viewers for a Monday Night Football telecast on ESPN.
Set as a modern day Romeo and Juliet, “High School Musical” is the story of two high school students who are drawn together despite their glaring differences in social status inside the school.
“High School Musical 2” follows the students after they complete their sophomore year and head into the summer.
The soundtrack to the 2006 Disney hit “High School Musical” was the best-selling album of the year.
