Senior Military Figures Arrested in Alleged Plot to Overthrow Turkish Government

An alleged plot to overthrow the Turkish government has resulted in the arrest of 40 senior military figures following a series of raids in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

According to reports the country’s top generals and admirals were meeting at the military headquarters to evaluate the investigation and determine how to proceed. Authorities have said the alleged plot dated back to 2003 with former heads of the air force and navy among those detained.

The plot, dubbed “sledgehammer,” allegedly included plans to bomb two mosques in 2003 as well as provoke Greece into downing a Turkish plane over the Aegean Sea in the same year.

The liberal Taraf newspaper said the goal was to undermine the Turkish government which would then justify a coup.
