2010 Winter Olympics Women’s Figure Skating Short Program Start List: Joannie Rochette Looks for Solid Start in Pursuit of Gold for Mother
With the 2010 Winter Olympics winding down the women’s figure skating competition is just getting started as the short program gets underway on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. ET.
While Canada has collected ten medals thus far, five of those gold, they will certainly elevate their enthusiasm for the Vancouver Games if Joannie Rochette can come out and put together a solid short program.
Rochette, a silver medalist at the 2009 World and six-time Canadian national champion, was questionable for Tuesday’s start after learning that her mother died from a heart attack on Sunday. She will certainly have her country behind her when she takes the ice but there is plenty of competition gunning for the gold.
The clear favorite for gold is South Korea’s Yu-Na Kim, the reigning world and Four Continents champion. The 19-year-old is known for her solid short program as well as her free skate and most people believe the only thing that can stop her from gold is herself.
The best shot at a medal for the U.S. will likely be 17-year-old Rachael Flatt, the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating champion. Flatt will need to put together the short program of her life if she is to have a meaningful free skate and contend for a spot on the podium.
