Johnny Cash Supporters Lobby for Re-Release of “Bitter Tears”

As fans celebrate the legacy of one of the most legendary musicians, some Johnny Cash fans are lobbying to Sony for the rerelease of the virtually unknown album “Bitter Tears.”

“Bitter Tears” is a protest album which discussed our nation’s mistreatment of Native Americans.

The songs, written by Cash, Peter La Farge and Johnny Horton were very controversial at the time of the release and Columbia did not really support the album. At radio stations, Cash found less backing, prompting him to take out a full-page ad in Billboard’s August 22, 1964 edition. The letter provides an indictment of his label and the stations which refused to play the album.

Lost Highway released “American VI: Ain’t No Grave,” the final recording which Johnny Cash made with producer Rick Rubin, on February 23rd, just a few days prior to what would have been Johnny Cash’s 78th birthday.
