Richard Anderson Named New Delta CEO

Richard Anderson was named CEO of Delta Air Lines, Inc. on Tuesday, replacing Gerald Grinstein in the leadership position.

Anderson, a former Northwest Airlines Corp. CEO will assume his new role on Sept. 1 as Grinstein retires from Delta and steps down from the board at age 75.

There had been much debate as to who would fill Grinstein’s shoes with many feeling that current CFO Ed Bastian or COO James Whitehurst stood a good shot at the top position. In the end the Delta board went with one of its own members in Anderson.

Daniel A. Carp, chairman of the Delta board, said Anderson “possesses the right blend of seasoned leadership, strategic skills, international experience and airline knowledge the company needs to navigate the industry's challenges and capitalize on its opportunities.”
