The Boston Red Sox scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning and John Lester pitched a shaky 5 1/3 innings to earn an 8-6 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night.
A run scoring triple by David Ortiz and an RBI single from Manny Ramirez staked Lester to a 2-0 first inning lead but the Rays tied it in the bottom half with a two-run blast from Carlos Pena.
The score remained 2-2 until the top of the fourth when the Red Sox plated five runs and off Tampa starter Andy Sonnanstine. Both Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo hit two-run doubles after Jason Varitek singled to score Ortiz.
Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect 1 1/3 innings, striking out three to record his 30th save of the year and give the Red Sox a 5 ½ game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East. That lead could bump to six games by the end of the night as the Yankees were trailing the Angles 13-5 in the bottom of the fourth in Anaheim.
