The St. Louis Cardinals closed to within three games of the National League Central lead after rallying to beat the Florida Marlins 5-2 on Tuesday night.
St. Louis trailed 2-1 with two outs in the eighth inning when the floodgates opened on the Marlins and the Cardinals plated four unearned runs. Armando Benitez retired Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds before inducing a ground ball to short off the bat of Juan Encarnacion. Hanley Ramirez fielded the ball cleanly but his throw sailed over the head of first baseman Jason Wood.
With Encarnacion on second Yadier Milina singled to score the tying run and then advanced to third on rightfielder Jeremy Hermida’s throwing error. Aaron Miles then punched a single for the go-ahead run and Ryan Ludwick followed with his 11th home run of the year to give the Cardinals a 5-2 advantage.
Jason Isringhausen came on in the ninth to record his 24th save of the year and send the Marlins to their seventh straight loss.
Florida was up 2-0 in the sixth but Pujols cut the lead in half with his 29th home run of the year. It was the fourth game in a row that Pujols has hit a homer.
