The women’s figure skating at the 2010 Winter Olympics got underway on Tuesday night with skaters taking the ice for their short program and there were plenty of highlights as several remarkable scores were posted ahead of Thursday’s free skate.
Kim Yu-Na entered the Olympics as the heavy favorite for gold and the South Korean didn’t disappoint as she set a new scoring record for short program with a 78.50. What made Kim Yu-Na’s score even more remarkable was it followed Mao Asada who set the bar high with a 73.78, a personal best.
Mao Asada, representing Japan, is holding on to the second spot but Canada’s Joannie Rochette is within striking distance after a gutsy score of 71.36. Rochette had to take the ice less than two days after her mother passed away from a heart attack and after her performance on Tuesday she broke down following her personal best score for a short program.
While the top three hold a comfortable lead and need only skate a solid free skate on Thursday to keep their spot atop the podium there are a handful of skaters who still have a shot. Among them is Rachael Flatt, the 17-year-old American skating in her first Olympics. Flatt put down a personal best 64.64, good enough for fifth.
