Former Minnesota Timberwolves power forward Eddie Griffin was killed in an accident involving an SUV and a train on Aug. 17. Griffin was 25-years-old.
A former first round selection by the New Jersey Nets in 2001, Griffin carried immense basketball talent yet often found himself battling his own demons. Griffin became known for his verbal and physical assaults with teammates as well as his struggles with alcoholism.
By the time he was released by the Minnesota Timberwolves in March 2007 Griffin had found that his off court problems had effectively ended his career.
On Aug 17 Griffin was driving his SUV in Texas when he ignored an active railroad crossing and his vehicle was slammed by a moving train. Officials have not determined if alcohol was involved in the accident or if Griffin’s death was intentional.
