KnowWare International Inc. in cooperation with E=mc3 Solutions announces the addition
of an Measurement Uncertainty Calculator to the QI Macros SPC (statistical process
control) software for Excel. Laboratories seeking to comply with ISO/IEC 17025 standard must
demonstrate the Measurement Uncertainty of their measurement capability under their laboratory
scope of accreditation.
Every measurement—length, width, volume, weight, etc.—has some degree of uncertainty. A
yardstick should have more uncertainty than a micrometer for example. Every lab must
be able to answer the following questions:
· What is the quantifiable uncertainty in their measurement process?
· Is one measurement consistent with another one?
To answer these questions, Jay Arthur and Dilip Shah have created a fill-in-the-blanks
template to calculate the uncertainty in one or more measurement parameters. There are two
types of uncertainty: type A and type B. The template will calculate both. Jay added the
uncertainty template to the QI Macros SPC Software for Excel.
The QI Macros are an add-in for Microsoft Excel that automate all of the charts and
diagrams required for statistical process control (SPC) and Lean Six Sigma. There are over
75,000 registered users. The QI Macros consist of four parts:
1. 21 Macros that use existing Excel data to create pareto, control charts, and histograms.
These tools are also very useful in performing data analysis required by the ISO/IEC 17025
standard.
2. Over 60 fill-in-the-blank templates for Lean Six Sigma and ISO documentation.
3. Statistical analysis tools like ANOVA, f-test, regression, and a sample size calculator.
4. AIAG Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility template that further quantifies measurement
uncertainty components.
5. Data transformation tools like restacking, word counts and cross tabulation.
Unlike complex statistical tools, the QI Macros tools can be used by anyone from nurses
to Six Sigma Black Belts. Users most often say that the QI Macros are convenient and hassle free
30-day evaluation copies of the QI Macros for Excel can be downloaded at
