Writer Grace Paley dies at 84

Short story writer and poet Grace Paley died Wednesday at the age of 84. According to her husband, Robert Nicolas, Paley passed away at their home in Thetford Hill, Vt.

Paley has been a published writer since the 50’s; writing only short stories and poems. She published her first collection on 1959 called “The Little Disturbances of Man: Stories of Men and Women at Love.” Other published stories include “Enormous Changes at the Last Minute,” “Later in the Same Day” and “Faith Darwin.”

 

Paley was also a strong activist. She called herself a “combative pacifist” and participated in many protest. She was arrested in 1978 during an anti-nuclear protest in the White House lawn; she visited Hanoi on a peace mission, and joined the War Registers League.

 

Paley married movie cameraman Jess Paley, and they had two children. In 1972 she married playwright Robert Nicolas. Together they formed Glad Day Books.

 

Paley suffered from breast cancer before passing away.
