Paley has been a published writer since the 50’s; writing only short stories and poems. She published her first collection on 1959 called “The Little Disturbances of Man: Stories of Men and Women at Love.” Other published stories include “Enormous Changes at the Last Minute,” “Later in the Same Day” and “Faith Darwin.”
Paley was also a strong activist. She called herself a “combative pacifist” and participated in many protest. She was arrested in 1978 during an anti-nuclear protest in the White House lawn; she visited
Paley married movie cameraman Jess Paley, and they had two children. In 1972 she married playwright Robert Nicolas. Together they formed Glad Day Books.
Paley suffered from breast cancer before passing away.
