Adrian Gonzalez hit a solo homerun in the top of the tenth to lift the San Diego Padres past the New York Mets 9-8 on Thursday night.
San Diego scored twice in the ninth off Billy Wagner to take a one-run advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth but Trevor Hoffman blew his fifth save opportunity of the year as the Mets tied the score on a David Wright sacrifice Fly that plated Jose Reyes.
Aaron Heilman retired the first Padre he faced in the ninth but then gave up the bomb to Gonzalez putting Hoffman in line for the win.
Heath Bell came on in the bottom half of the tenth to shut the door on the Mets and earn his first save of the year.
The win, coupled with the Philadelphia Phillies loss pushed the Padres wildcard lead to two games.
