Ang Lee's most recent film, "Lust, Caption", has been given an NC-17 rating by the MPAA. The movie, starring Tony Leung and newcomer Tang Wei, is an erotic spy thriller about a young woman who gets involved with a plot to assassinate a Japanese collaborator.
Lee, whose last movie was "Brokeback Mountain" with Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, and Focus Pictures, the film's U.S. distributors, are not going to change the movie around to get a better rating. They stand by the decision.
The NC-17 rating is known throughout the industry as a death sentence to widestream success. The rating denotes excessive gore or, as in this case, an overly erotic theme.
The movie is slated to premiere in the U.S. on September 28.
