U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said she would like to see Israel and Palestinians return to their stalled peace talks as quickly as possible.
Speaking before a congressional committee on Wednesday Clinton said “We think it’s absolutely essential that they begin to talk about the issues that divide them.”
While Clinton has urged for the talks to resume the two sides involved have shown little willingness to accommodate the secretary of state’s request. Earlier this week the divide became wider as Israel laid claim over two biblical shrines located in the West Bank.
Israel’s claim to the Tomb of Rachel and the Tomb of the Patriarchs enraged Palestinians, leading the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas to say the roe “could spark war.”
That kind of rhetoric sparked Clinton to push for resumed peace talks but the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama has found that to be a difficult task thus far.
