Landslide in Indonesia Leaves at least 70 Dead

Heavy rain in Indonesia triggered a landslide that buried a village near the city of Bandung, killing at least 70 people and leaving several more trapped under mud and debris.

The village, located in the Ciwidey district on the Java island, has been hammered by heavy rain over the past few days. With much of the hillsides surrounding the village stripped of vegetation the soil was left vulnerable and when the rains hit the land simply collapsed.

That collapse led to the landslide which swallowed the village.

According to West Java police spokesman Dade Ahmad “The landslide is very deep. At this point, the chance of pulling out victims alive is slim.” Despite the dim outlook rescue efforts have continued with many people still digging by hand to search for victims.
