John Singleton, director of hit movies such as “Shaft,” “Hustle and Flow,” and “Boyz N the Hood,” struck and killed a pedestrian while driving his Lexus SUV in Los Angeles on Thursday evening.
The pedestrian, 57-year-old Constance Russell, died a few hours after being rushed to a hospital following the accident. Police said that Russell was not using a crosswalk when she stepped in front of Singleton’s vehicle.
Singleton, 39, was permitted to leave after police determined the Academy Award nominated director was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the accident occurred.
