Golf great Tiger Woods finally broke his silence on Feb. 19, 2010, with a 14-minute statement during which he apologized and said he was returning to treatment. The question remains, “treatment for what?” Woods carefully couched his references to rehab, saying he was getting help for his problems. Not that he owes it to the public to detail just what those problems are, but that’s a long time to talk without really clearing anything up.
Unlike Woods, singer-songwriter John Mayer isn’t in hot water for infidelity, but at least one Twitter follower suggested he enter rehab to repair his damaged image after comments made during a Playboy interview caused quite a stir.
Mayer’s comments, which included using the “N” word and likening his genitals to David Duke, had one follower commenting, “Just waiting for @johncmayer to follow up his apology with an announcement that he's going to rehab. I mean, it kinda worked for Tiger, no?”
Mayer replied to that post with, “They don't make rehab centers for being an a-hole.”
Both celebs have made public apologies (Mayer at a Nashville concert and via Twitter, Woods at a press conference) and both laid low following the incidents. Woods followed that up with a stint at a treatment facility, one he’ll presumably return to, according to his own press statements. Meanwhile, Mayer cut off almost all communication with the “Twitterverse,” a place he frequented prior to the incident, posting details about his daily random musings.
Just a day before the Playboy controversy erupted, Mayer’s Twitter posts included, “What's that song that goes ‘It's a quarter after one, I just huffed a can of ceiling paint and I need you now?’ and, “I need to stop taking pills with names that are palindromes: Xanax, H-Coninoch, Lipilipil, Seresiseres XR, Odin's Fury.”
While likely jokes, it’s posts like that make it no wonder some are suggesting he look into treatment.
