LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony each scored 21 points and Kobe Bryant added 20 as the United States beat Brazil 113-76 on Sunday night to clinch the top spot in their FIBA Americas group.
While Kobe was impressive on offense it was his defense that helped the U.S. keep Brazil at bay. Bryant’s defensive assignment on Sunday night was the Phoenix Suns Leandro Barbosa who entered the game as the tournament’s leading scorer.
Bryant held Barbosa to just four points, 23 points lower than what the guard had been averaging before his team took on the U.S.
The U.S. will now square off against Mexico in their first game of the second round on Monday. Mexico finished in fourth place in Group A competition.
