Earthquake in Japan Kills Six

A powerful earthquake of a 6.8 magnitude shook Japan’s northwestern coast on Monday. Debris was left along the coast of Niigata, a prefecture that was hit once before by a devastating earthquake in 2004.

The earthquake, which occurred at 10:13 a.m. on what was the Japanese U.K. Summer Bank national holiday, interrupted the supply of power, leaving one local train and shutting down service on the bullet train for several hours, and water to tens of thousands of homes.

More than 7,000 people had left their homes for evacuation centers, which were near by gymnasiums and recreational centers.

This intense earthquake killed six people and injured more than 700 residents. The earthquake also flattened hundreds of buildings, which in return caused minor tsunamis and buckling roads and bridges.
