Sam Brownback Profile & Polls - 2008 Election Chances

Sam Brownback, who was born on September 12, 1956 in Kansas, is currently the Senior U.S. Senator for the state of Kansas. Brownback received his J.D. from the University of Kansas in 1982. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1994. Though he is not well known outside of his home state, the Associated Press reports that he is raising his profile through a network of social conservatives and Christian activists in Iowa and New Hampshire. He is well known for his conservative record, both socially and fiscally. He opposes abortion and wants to institute a flat tax alternative to the current IRS code. Brownback was a cosponsor of the Constitution Restoration Act. This would have limited the power of federal courts to rule on church/state issues. Brownback formed an exploratory committee on December 4, 2006 and officially announced his Presidential bid on December 5, 2006 on his website.

As far as healthcare issues are concerned, Brownback is in support of a bill that will introduce price transparency to the U.S. health care industry. He also supports a bill that would require the disclosure of Medicare payment rate information.

Addressing the issue of military and foreign policy, Brownback voted YES to authorize the use of military force on Iraq and he voted NO on redeploying troops out of Iraq by July 2007.
