John McCain was born on August 29, 1936 in the Panama Canal Zone. He is a decorated war veteran, an American politician and currently holds the title of U.S. Senator in Arizona. He has been a candidate for the presidency in 2000 but was beaten by George W. Bush for the republican nomination. He formally announced on April 25, 2007 that he is looking for the Republican Presidential nomination.
McCain married Cindy Hensley and moved to Phoenix, Arizona in 1980. When John Jacob Rhodes announced his retirement from Arizona’s 1st congressional district, McCain ran as a Republican for the seat in 1982 and won. In 1986, when Republican Senator Barry Goldwater retired, McCain was elected to succeed him.
Now it is 2007 and the race for the Republican nomination for the presidency is on. So where does he stand on the issues? Well when it comes to civil liberties, the issues seem to vary.
He supports civil unions in gay rights but opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment. He is one of the Senate’s leading Republican advocates for humane immigration reform. He believes that abortion should be banned in all cases except where the pregnancy is caused by rape, incest or if it is necessary to save the mother’s life.
John McCain is independent and tends to function as a moderate Republican where the Senate is concerned but his record shows that he is socially conservative on most issues. As for right now McCain definitely seems to be a frontrunner in the 2008 race.
