Mitt Romney is a successful businessman, no doubt. He has founded businesses that have grown successful and nursed ailing ones back to health. However, outside the business arena few people have heard of Mitt Romney. While on a recent tour of Florida, he claimed he would meet with voters across the country to help everyone remember his name.
While Rudy Giuliani and John McCain are currently considered the front runners in the early stages of the 2008 presidential election, Romney is using his business background in a bid for the White House. Knowing the public’s skepticism about a lifelong politician and the need for change, Romney thinks he is the man to change how things are done in Washington, D.C.
While a person with his business background may be what America’s economy needs, someone familiar with working the political system to their best advantage could get more done in a lot less time. In the business world, people are used to having their way, and underlings who don’t perform are usually replaced. The political system does not work that way and despite being elected by the people, the president serves at the pleasure of Congress.
It is not normal for a president from one party to forge a working relationship with members of an opposing party and it takes a lot of grass roots cajoling by their constituents to make politicians join forces with the party in power. While his business sense may be unquestionable, his ability to work with a diverse group of others remains to be seen and no one will elect a president on a maybe.
