Miss Teen South Carolina Lauren Caitlin Upton appeared on the “Today” show Tuesday morning to explain her perplexing answer to an educational questioned posed to her during the Miss Teen USA Pageant held last week.
Upton was asked why 1/5 of Americans couldn’t identify the United States on a map and her response has led to countless Miss Teen South Carolina video clips highlighting the answer.
Lauren Caitlin Upton concluded that 1/5 of American’s couldn’t find the United States on a map because many in the country didn’t own a map. If that wasn’t bad enough Upton proceeded to mention South Africa and “the Iraq,” somehow twisting the question around to how the education system in America should help “the Iraq countries” and “the Asian countries” in identifying the U.S. on a map.
Upton had a chance to explain on the “Today” show that she only heard two of the words involved in the question and the inquiry had caught her of guard. It’s anybody’s guess what two words she actually heard but regardless Miss Teen South Carolina still finished third runner-up at the pageant.
