Three days after collapsing on the soccer pitch during his team’s Spanish league match against Getafe, FC Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta has died.
Cause of death was listed as “multiple organ failure stemming from prolonged cardiac arrest” after the 22-year-old star suffered two heart attacks following his on-field collapse.
It was during Saturday’s contest that Puerta lost consciousness and dropped to the ground. He was treated on the field and was able to walk off with assistance but his condition worsened after being admitted into an intensive care unit at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital.
Funeral arrangements for Puerta are scheduled for Wednesday and his family has requested that his body be wrapped in a Sevilla flag for the burial.
