Professional free skier C.R. Johnson, 26, died Wednesday
while skiing with a group of friend’s at California’s Squaw Valley.
Jim Rogers, a member of the resort’s ski patrol, said
Johnson was attempting to navigate a “very, very tight, rocky area” when he
fell face-first, spun around and hit the back of his head on rocks. Although Johnson
was wearing a helmet, the blow killed him instantly.
Johnson competed in the Winter X Games and was a member
of the Squaw Valley free ride team. He won the US open in 2002.
In 2005, Johnson was
involved in a ski accident with Kye Peterson at the Brighton Ski Resort in
Utah. Johnson suffered a serious brain injury when Peterson accidentally landed
on him. He was put in to a medically-induced coma for 10 days. Johnson had to relearn
basic motor skills such as swallowing and talking. He also had to relearn to
ski.
