Ali Tounsi, chief of Algeria’s national police force, has been shot and killed by a colleague in the capital of Algiers.
According to reports the shooting occurred during a routine morning meeting at police headquarters. Tounsi was conducting the meeting when a colleague pulled a weapon and shot the chief before turning the gun on himself.
While the killing has not been linked to Islamist militants a judicial inquiry into the attack has been launched. Islamist militants have a history of targeting government officials in Algeria but there has been no evidence that supports a connection between the gunman and militants.
