Toyota Motor Corp. is aiming to be the first automaker to sell 10.4 million cars and trucks in 2009. This number is more than one million more vehicles than what Toyota projected they would sell in 2007.
Toyota intends to sell approximately 3.1 million vehicles in North America, 2.4 million in Japan, and 1.45 million in Europe. For 2008, Toyota plans to sell 9.8 million vehicles worldwide; including subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd.
If the goal is reached, Toyota will be the first automaker group in history to sell more than 10 million vehicles in a single year.
To date, General Motors Corp. holds the industry record of selling 9.55 million units in 1978. However, Toyota is well on its way to surpasing this number with their popular Camry model as well as the Prius gas-electric hybrid sedans enjoying tremendous sales. Toyota celebrated a first earlier this year as they sold more vehicles than GM during the April-June period.
In addition to enhancing its production capabilities in markets throughout the world, Toyota plans on establishing new plants and facilities in China and Russia later this year. The company is also thinking about expanding areas for teh sale of its upscale Lexus brand.
